Play Therapy & Creative Arts Counselling for Children and Young People

How does play therapy work?

Play therapy is a therapeutic approach that uses play and creative arts to help children express and process their thoughts and feelings in a safe environment.

What can play therapy help with?

Jacaranda Therapy provides play and creative arts therapy for children aged 4–12. These therapies offer a safe, supportive space for children and young people who may be experiencing emotional, behavioural or difficult life experiences, including:

Abuse, Anger, Anxiety, Attachment insecurities, ADD, ASD, Behaviour challenges, Bereavement or loss, Concentration, Confidence, Domestic violence, Family tension or separation, Low self-esteem, Neglect, Peer relationships, Resilience, Trauma.

Our child centred-approach

Play therapy for children is what counselling is for adults. Trained and qualified therapists use a person-centred approach that focuses on individual needs.

What happens in play therapy?

Sessions last approximately 45mins, once a week, and it's a time for the child to use the play materials to explore he/her thoughts and feelings. All the support given to families is personalised to meet the needs of each individual child so that they can get the most out of our time together.

The play therapy toolkit includes:

Clay, Sand and miniatures, Musical instruments, Puppets, Role play toys, Construction toys, Paint and other art materials, Games, Books.

Play and creative arts counselling

Play and creative arts counselling is for young people who are generally of secondary school age. It is based on the same child-centred principles as play therapy, using creativity and the therapeutic relationship to help young people explore their thoughts, feelings and experiences. As young people are often more able to reflect on and talk about what is happening for them, sessions are more focused on talking therapy, with creative activities used alongside conversation when helpful. This provides a safe, supportive space where young people can express themselves in ways that feel comfortable and meaningful to them.
